Newsletter 9, Week 9 Term 3

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we come to the end of Term 3, I would like to say a big thank you to all members of the school community for your contribution and support throughout the term. Once again, we experienced ongoing challenges regarding high absenteeism of students and staff that challenged all of us from time to time. Hopefully with the warmer weather almost upon us, there will be a decline in general illness across the school providing us all with a more positive outlook as we move towards the end of the year.

It is hard to believe that we will be commencing Term 4 in a few weeks, this being the final term for our Year 6 students at Wellard Primary School.  I would like to wish all of these students all the best and hope they continue to work hard throughout the term.

CANTEEN CLOSED

Due to unforeseen circumstances our school canteen will be closed this Thursday 12th September.

SCHOOL PHOTOS (KAPTURE)

Parents are reminded that our school photos will be conducted between Monday 14th to Thursday 17th October (Week 2, Term 4). Parents are encouraged to order online, as there is no longer the option to order via an envelope. A connect notice will be sent home later this week with more information.

STUDENT REPORTS SEMESTER 2 2024

As part of a Department-wide initiative to reduce red tape and workload for teachers and school leaders, we are reviewing on how we report student progress and achievement for the end of Semester 2. The Department has worked with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority to clarify the following:

• There is a requirement to provide an overall                                   teacher comment, the content of which is             determined by the school.

• There is no requirement to provide learning area comments.

• There is no requirement to provide grades at the strand or sub-strand level.

• There is no requirement to provide a learning area comment or attachments, such as photos, for students with special educational needs. Reporting for these students aligns with the individual education plan that was developed with parents. Principals have been asked to consider reviewing their current practices to ensure requirements are being met, and that workload for teachers and school leaders is minimised. I have recently consulted with our P&C, School Board and staff and will notify our school community with any changes early next term. In the interim, any parents wishing to comment on any of the above changes can do so by emailing myself geoff.miller@education.wa.edu.au

NAPLAN DATA 2024

Yesterday, I presented our 2024 NAPLAN data to our School Board. Year 3 and 5 students across Australia were tested in Numeracy, Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation back in March. I am pleased to report that Wellard PS has performed well in most areas when compared to similar schools. Our results in Spelling were outstanding whilst we still have some work to do in improving our Numeracy results. This improvement will occur through our planning for 2025.

PLANNING FOR 2025

We have begun the process of organising our school for 2025. Any families who know they are not returning next year are asked to inform the school through the office.

SCIENCE WEEK

A big thank you to Mrs Singleton for organising all activities associated with Science Week. Students have had the opportunity to participate in a range of science activities and attend an incursion. Well done Mrs Singleton!!

OPEN NIGHT

On Tuesday 17th September (Week 10), Wellard PS will be conducting an Open Night where parents are able to visit their child’s classroom and have a look at the work they have been doing throughout the year. Classrooms will be open between 4.00 – 6.00pm. Please note there will not be sufficient time for you to organise a meeting with your child’s teacher during Open Night. This is to be arranged for another time. We do hope that parents (particularly Dads) take up this opportunity to visit Wellard PS.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2025

Wellard PS still has some vacancies for Kindergarten for 2025, but they are filling fast. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2020 and 30th June 2021. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:

  • Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
  • Up to date Immunisation Records
  • Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.

Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s website. We only have 14 vacancies available for next year.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

Payment of Voluntary Contributions is now due. Funds raised through these contributions are used to purchase resources etc. to complement the educational programs we run throughout the school. Thank you to those families who have already paid their contributions. As a school we are always conscious of the costs we seek from parents in relation to educational activities.

Kindergarten – Year 6 - $60 per child per year.

Our preferred way of payment is by using our Qkr App, please see attached PDF for details. School contributions can also be paid at the office or

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS MUSICAL SOCIETY

Under the guidance of Mrs Amanda Middleton and Miss Ash Alden, our school choir performed at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre recently. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and did Wellard PS very proud. I would like to acknowledge and thank Miss Ash Alden, Miss Foster, Miss Nicole Rindel, Miss Amy Della Bosca, Miss Remy Barret and Mr Van Berkel for preparing and supervising our school choir for this event. Special thanks to those staff and parents who attended to support our choir.

BOOK FAIR

Mrs Jane Rogers, our school librarian, has organised for our Book Fair to be conducted between Wednesday 28th August – Monday 4th September (Weeks 7 & 8). Students and parents have been able to purchase books and other book related items before and after school. At the end of the Book Fair we had sales of $6303. The library will receive a commission of 40% ($2521) of total sales which will be used to purchase more books for the library. A huge thank you to Mrs Rogers for again coordinating our Book Fair.

HOUSE JUMPS AND THROWS

Congratulations to all students on the level of sportsmanship they displayed today and the way they conducted themselves in supporting each other. Well done Mr Paparone and Mr McIntyre on the organisation of the day. A reminder that we will be conducting our Yr 1 – 6 House Athletics Carnival on Thursday 10th October (Week 1, Term 4).

PHOTOGRAPHS OF STUDENTS

In recent weeks we have had events where it has provided the opportunity for parents to take photographs of their own children. We have a number of parents who have requested their child’s photograph not be used by the school on Facebook, Instagram etc. for a range of reasons. I request that when taking photographs of your own child, please do not post them on social media if the identity of other students can be determined.

P&C MEETING

Our next P&C Meeting will be held on Monday 21st October (Term 4, Week 3) commencing at 2pm in the Staff Room.

END OF TERM DATES

The last day of term is Friday 20th September with students returning on Monday 7th October. There is no School Development Day on the first day of Term Four.

Have a great break everyone!

Kind regards

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

The KSSA Cross Country event took place on Tuesday, August 20th. It was a fantastic day, especially as our students were required to show resilience to overcome many obstacles that were thrown their way. Our students were rewarded for their fantastic efforts, and we finished second overall, our highest placing finish ever! We are extremely proud of not only the dedication that our Cross Country teamed showed, but their excellent behaviour when out representing our school. Thank you to those who came to support their children run at Thomas Oval both on the day and for training sessions this past term. We would also like to thank Miss Della Bosca and Miss Burke for their efforts on the day, such as getting things organised and assisting our students.

Places:

2nd Year 3 Girls – Layton

3rd Year 6 Girls – Joyce

2nd Overall championship – Wellard Primary School (736 points).
