Newsletter 6 Term 2 Week 9

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. At Wellard, we have chosen to celebrate NAIDOC Week during Week 11. The theme for 2023 is “Keep the Fire Burning. Blak, Loud and Proud”.

This year’s theme “Keep the Fire Burning. Blak, Loud and Proud”, celebrates the strong spirit of our communities. We want everyone to come together and support each other, making sure that everyone's voices are heard. The fire symbolizes the lasting power and energy of Indigenous cultures. Even though they've faced tough times, their traditions have been passed down through generations. It shows how connected they are to the land, to each other, and to their rich history. As we recognize this symbol, we're lighting the flame of pride and togetherness. It reminds us to keep honouring, protecting, and sharing the cultural heritage that makes our country special.

Students at Wellard PS will be participating in a range of activities focussing on the “Keep the Fire Burning. Blak, Loud and Proud” theme. This will include:

  • Deadly Discos and Free Dress (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island colours – Red, yellow, black, green, blue & white) – Friday 28th June
  • Noongar Animal Book Competition
  • Kwobidak Kaal (Beautiful fire) displays – representing this year theme “Keep the fire burning. Blak, Loud and Proud”
  • NAIDOC Rotations & Community Morning Tea – Wednesday 26th June
  • Rock Painting – art installation
  • Story Time with our Noongar Teacher, Mrs Titko

Please look out for further on information on Connect and Facebook in the coming weeks.

GIRLS SOCCER

On the 10th of May our Wellard girl's soccer team made the state final playoffs. The girls did tremendously well, coming up against one of the best teams in the competition in the opening round. Unfortunately, the girls were unable to get a victory in their first match. However, their effort and commitment to the team over the last 5 months has been amazing. The girls finished in 8th place in the entire of Western Australia and we are all super proud of them. Well done girls.

CANTEEN NEWS

Can I please ask all parents and caregivers to be mindful when placing orders, that you have the correct day for your order. Recently there has been a few orders with incorrect dates, this causes confusion for the children when they are expecting a lunch order and it is not there.

If you child is absent, please inform the canteen directly before 10am on the day. This will ensure the order can be fully refunded or the order can be transferred to another day.

I would like to advise parents and caregivers that the canteen will not be open in Week 11 of Term 2. Our final day for orders will be Friday 21st June 2024

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Kind regards
