Newsletter 9, Term 2, Week 8
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. At Wellard, we have chosen to celebrate NAIDOC Week this week as we have swimming lessons occurring when we would normally do so. The theme for 2023 is “For Our Elders”. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the role Elders have played, and continue to play, within their communities and families. Students at Wellard PS will be participating in a range of activities focussing on the “For Our Elders” theme. This will include art and craft activities, a focus on famous Indigenous people, poetry, poster competition and the reading of a book titled “Family” by Aunty Far Muir and Sue Lawson.
KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2024
Wellard PS is now taking enrolments for Kindergarten for 2024. Enrolments will close on Friday 21st July (Week 1 Term 3). It is most important that you enrol your Kindergarten child for next year as soon as possible. Please speak with neighbours etc. who you know need to enrol their child. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2019 and 30th June 2020. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:
- Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
- Up to date Immunisation Records
- Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.
Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s website.
PLEASE NOTE: We only have 120 places for Kindergarten students in 2024 – we have already distributed 109 enrolment packages, leaving 11 left. Once we will fill the 120 places, we will not be able to receive any more enrolments, so it is very important enrolments are completed as soon as possible.
VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS
Payment of Voluntary Contributions is now due. Funds raised through these contributions are used to purchase resources etc. to complement the educational programs we run throughout the school. Thank you to those families who have already paid their contributions. As a school we are always conscious of the costs we seek from parents in relation to educational activities.
Kindergarten – Year 6 - $60 per child per year.
Our preferred way of payment is by using our Qkr App, please see attached PDF for details.
School contributions can also be paid at the office or
By direct deposit

SHADE CLOTH OVER PLAYGROUNDS
I am in the process of obtaining quotes to cover each of our playgrounds with shade cloth. Once the quote comes through, we will be better placed to prioritise which equipment will be covered. The equipment in the Kindergarten/Pre-primary area will be privileged over the others. More info to follow.
NEW CAR PARK
There still has been no movement on the site of our new car park even though the Telstra cables have been moved. After contacting the project manager, I have been informed that work will be commencing in the next couple of days with a finish date of Sunday 16th July, the day before school starts.
NEW TRAFFIC WARDEN
I am extremely pleased to announce that we have a new Traffic Warden. Her name is Margo and she is very happy to be working at our school. Welcome Margo!!
SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS
Currently we have quite a lot happening in this space. Our sustainability garden is well under way with the planting out of our garden beds and the planting of a range of fruit trees. Ms Tunnacliffe has set up a worm farm in her classroom and Room 27 (Miss Baker, Yr 3) have an incursion planned to learn about how to maintain a worm farm. Mrs Singleton has started the collection of paper around the school which is collected on a weekly basis. I would like to thank Miss Tunnacliffe, Mrs Singleton, Miss Scheer, Mrs Protzman and Mr Ricci for their contribution to our sustainability projects.
INTERM SWIMMING (PP – YR 6)
Interm Swimming will be conducted over the last two weeks of this term for those students who did not participate in the first group. It is most important parents take up this opportunity to improve the swimming skills of their children. Not only will this enable them to survive should they fall into a swimming pool etc. but also provide them with the skills to save others. It is most important that children learn to swim when they are young as very few go on to learn to swim as adults.
UNIFORM CONCEPTS (NELLGREY)
Our school uniforms are available to purchase online using the Uniform Concepts website: www.nellgray.com.au or you can visit their Jandakot Store in person to make purchases. They are located at 26 Solomon Road, Jandakot. We have a full range of size samples available to view and try on at school, please enquire at reception.
As of Term 3, uniforms will no longer be delivered to the school for pickup so you will need to purchase uniforms in store or pay a postage fee for delivery to your preferred address.
Kind regards
