Newsletter 8, Week 6 Term 3

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Recently we had a serious incident occur where one of our students was knocked off his bike after school in a nearby street. Fortunately, this child was not hurt but he was visibly shaken because of this incident. This is a timely reminder for drivers and pedestrians to move around our school with a great deal of care and patience. I would like to remind all community members of the following:

  • Drive around our school and through our carparks very slowly always prepared for a child who may suddenly appear in front of you.
  • Please be patient when caught up in traffic, do not cross onto the opposite side of the road to pass vehicles.
  • Do not drop your child off in a carpark unless you have driven into a car bay.
  • Do not park your vehicle on footpaths, kerbs or any other pedestrian areas.
  • Consider picking your children up 5 minutes after school finishes to assist in reducing the traffic flow.
  • Students who ride a bike or scooter should be wearing a helmet at all times.

Very soon, the City of Kwinana will be painting a yellow No Stopping Line on Irasburg Parade onto McWhirter Promenade. In an attempt to reduce traffic flow, this will mean that vehicles will not be permitted to queue up along the road when trying to access the Kiss and Drive on McWhirter Promenade. This will be monitored by City Assist on a regular basis.

DUTY TEACHER CORNER OF MCWHIRTER PROMENADE AND IRASBURG PARADE

The school has recently applied for a Traffic Warden to be placed at the above intersection. In the interim we have decided to try and escort students across the intersection each afternoon. Unfortunately, from time to time, we are unable to provide this service due to staff being absent from school and other duty areas having to be supervised. We will do our very best to ensure this service is provided but it cannot always be guaranteed.

OPEN NIGHT

On Tuesday 17th September (Week 10), Wellard PS will be conducting an Open Night where parents are able to visit their child’s classroom and have a look at the work they have been doing throughout the year. Classrooms will be open between 4.00 – 6.00pm. Please note there will not be sufficient time for you to organise a meeting with your child’s teacher during Open Night. This is to be arranged for another time. We do hope that parents (particularly Dads) take up this opportunity to visit Wellard PS.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2025

Wellard PS still has some vacancies for Kindergarten for 2025, but they are filling fast. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2020 and 30th June 2021. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:

  • Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
  • Up to date Immunisation Records
  • Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.

Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s website. We only have 16 vacancies available for next year.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY EVENT

Selected students from Years 3 – 6 participated in the Interschool Cross Country Oval at Thomas Oval, Medina today. Congratulations to all of our students who represented Wellard PS with the highest level of pride and sportsmanship. Finishing in second position was a great achievement for our school considering the number of students who were unable to compete for various reasons. A big thank you to Ms Della Bosca and Miss Burke for helping throughout the day and to Mr Paparone and Mr McIntyre for organising this opportunity for students.

BOOK WEEK PARADE (K – Yr 6)

Our Book Week Parade will be conducted this Thursday 22nd August in the quadrangle area commencing at 8.50am. The Friday Kindergarten Groups will have their own parade on the Friday morning. Hopefully the weather is very kind to us.

BOOK FAIR (WEEKS 7/8)

Our Book Fair will be conducted from Wednesday 28th August to Monday 2nd September. This is a great opportunity for parents to purchase a book for their child amongst other stationary items. You might also want to consider donating a book to our school library. Thank you to Mrs Rogers for organising.

SCIENCE WEEK

Mrs Singleton will be organising a range of activities for Science Week which will be occurring in Week 8. (2nd – 6th September). This will be an exciting time for all students.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS MUSIC SOCIETY

Under the guidance of Mrs Amanda Middleton, our school choir has been preparing itself for their performance at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on the evening of Thursday 29th August. Parents and guardians who are interested in attending can purchase tickets through ManPAC as outlined in the note sent home to parents. I would like to acknowledge and thank Mrs Middleton for preparing our school choir for this event.

HOUSE JUMPS AND THROWS DAY

Our House jumps and throws events will be conducted on Tuesday 10th September (Week 9) on our school oval. Please note that we have decided to conduct these events on the one day rather than over two days. Parents are welcome to attend. The Kindergarten Carnivals will be conducted on the 11th (Wed) and 12th September (Thurs) with the Pre-primary Carnival being held on Thursday 5th September. More information will be available closer to these dates. A reminder that we will be conducting our Yr 1 – 6 House Athletics Carnival on Thursday 10th October (Week 1, Term 4).

UNIFORMS

Parents are asked to write their child’s name on all uniform items, particularly zip up jackets. Having their name on it ensures they are promptly returned to the child concerned.  I also suggest students leave their hat at school to prevent them from leaving them at home. They can still take them home every few weeks for a wash.

DISABLED PARKING BAYS

I would like to remind all school community members that the Disabled Parking Bays are only for those vehicles that have ACROD stickers. Please, DO NOT park in these bays at any time unless your vehicle is stickered accordingly.

Kind regards

Geoff Miller
