Newsletter 8, Term 2, Week 6, 31 May 2022
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
This week – 27th May to 3rd June, we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. Its theme – “Be Brave. Make Change”, sets us the challenge to continue making ever important strides towards a culturally responsive and reconciled society. This challenge is essential to becoming an equitable community where truth-telling is embedded in how we work, teach and live. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all of us to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Congratulations to Rooms 7 & 8 on their recent assemblies where they highlighted the wonderful work that Mr Dylan Collard is overseeing across the school as our Noongar teacher. As Mr Collard said at Assembly, reconciliation is a journey that is ongoing and a process we should all engage in. All students have participated in a range of class activities highlighting the important aspects of Reconciliation Week. I would like to acknowledge Ms Lanzel and Mr Collard for organising these activities.
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY FRIDAY 3RD JUNE
We have a School Development Day on Friday 3rd June (Week 6) where students do not attend school. Staff will be engaged in professional learning and planning for the rest of this year. The following Monday, 6th June is a Public Holiday for WA Day.
SWIMMING LESSONS CANCELLED TERM 3
Half of our students had their swimming lessons cancelled in Weeks 7 & 8 of Term 1 due to Covid. The remaining students were booked in for swimming lessons in Weeks 1 & 2 of Term 3. I have made the decision to cancel these lessons for the following reasons:
- Current staff shortages may still be an issue with 40% of staff yet to catch Covid.
- Our student attendance will continue to be impacted by Covid and the flu with the further complication of cold weather during this time.
- The two-week session was only going to consist of 8 lessons.
It is a shame that students have missed out on swimming lessons this year but we are hopeful they will go ahead in 2023.
P&C AGM MEETING
The P&C will be conducting their next meeting on Monday 13th June commencing at 6pm in the school staff room. The P&C have done a great job in recent time considering the restrictions we have had in place. The fence has been put around our sustainability garden which is going in behind the canteen. This has only occurred through the hard work of our P&C over a long period of time. Please come along to our next meeting, meet some new people and become involved creating extra opportunities for the students at Wellard Primary School.
STUDENT REPORTS AND CONNECT
It is most important that EVERY PARENT (Pre-primary – Yr 6) has used Connect by Monday 27th June so they are able to access a copy of their child’s report. Please note that reports (Pre-primary – Yr 6) will be sent home on MONDAY 27TH JUNE via Connect. Parents are asked to inform the office if a copy of a report needs to be disseminated to other parties. Paper copies are provided to all Kindergarten students as their reporting format is very different to the rest of the school. Do not hesitate to contact the office if you experience difficulties accessing Connect.
FREE RAPID ANTIGEN TESTS (RATs)
Parents and carers are reminded that each of your children who attend Wellard PS are entitled to a box containing 20 free RATs. These RATs can be collected from the office. Please note we are not permitted to send the RATs home with primary school aged children. Do not hesitate to contact the office if you have any queries.
KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2023
Wellard PS is now taking enrolments for Kindergarten for 2023. Enrolments will close on Friday 22nd July (Week 1 Term 3). It is most important that you enrol your Kindergarten child for next year as soon as possible. Please speak with neighbours etc. who you know need to enrol their child. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2018 and 30th June 2019. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:
- Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
- Up to date Immunisation Records
- Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.
Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
A reminder that our School Cross Country will be conducted on Thursday 16th June on our school oval.
SCHOOL JACKETS
The cold weather is now upon us along with quite a bit of rain. Parents are asked to ensure their children wear the school jacket to school which can be ordered online at www.nellgray.com.au
ASSEMBLY
Our next Blue Assembly will be conducted by Miss Scheer’s Yr 4 class (Rm 17) at 8.50am in the undercover area on Friday 10th June (Week 7). The following week (Friday 17th June) will be a Pink Assembly conducted by Miss Vinten’s Yr 4 class (Rm 15) (Week 8).

P & C NEWS
P & C Meeting
There will be a P&C meeting the 13th of June at 6pm in the Wellard Staff Room. We welcome any new and past members to help keep the P&C alive, whether it’s with ideas, adhoc assistance, or any amount of valuable time to give.
Canteen News
Thank you for your continued support of the canteen, remember to advise the canteen if your child is off sick so the child’s lunch order can be cancelled.
Please also if anyone has any time to spare the canteen is looking for volunteers, no experience necessary.
If you have any time you could give, big or small we would love to hear from you, Linda Canteen Manager can be contacted through the school’s reception during school hours or via the Facebook Page.
Upcycled Uniforms
Uniform Donations are HAPPILY accepted at any time and can be dropped off at the school reception. All proceeds go towards the P&C Fundraising which this year is supporting the Schools Sustainability Garden.
Uniform shop opens Tuesday’s 2:30pm-4:30pm at the front office, CASH ONLY.
Donations
The P & C are always looking for donations from small business owners or families of new goods to put towards the raffles throughout the year. The next will be our Father’s Day raffle.
If you have any new items or gift certificates to add, please email wellardpandc@gmail.com or contact via the Facebook Page for drop off locations or collection organisation. We will be looking to help promote local businesses when running the raffles, so families can look at local alternatives when purchasing and supporting our local families and businesses.
Containers for Change
Many thanks to all the families who have already started making a change and donating to the P&C.
Please consider joining the change makers, teach your kids about the environment & support the P&C to raise funds for our Schools Sustainability Garden. Keep those cans and bottles acquired through the festive season.
All you need to do is:
- Collect eligible bottles at home
- Deliver to a collection point like Exchange Depot WA - Containers for Change in Kwinana
- Quote scheme ID: C10407164 to donate to Wellard P&C
