Newsletter 7, Term 2, Week 4, 17 May 2022

Over the last fortnight, the school has received many supportive messages from members of our school community wanting to help out or to acknowledge the challenges we are encountering. Thank you so much for this as it certainly lifts the morale of staff knowing that we have such a supportive and caring school community. Thank you everyone!

We continue to have many staff impacted by Covid. We have 13 teaching staff and 7 non-teaching staff away today. The few that are returning are immediately replaced by other staff who test positive. The students have been outstanding in their response by quickly adapting to changing classrooms and teachers. The curriculum we deliver is the same in every year group classroom so there has been little impact on student learning.

Parents and carers are reminded that each of your children who attend Wellard PS are entitled to a box containing 20 free RATs. These RATs can be collected in front of the office between 8.15 – 9am and in the afternoon from 2.30 – 3pm for this week only. A note was sent home last week with a tear off slip for parents to fill out to bring to school to collect their RATs. This was also disseminated to parents via Connect. These slips are available from the pickup point as well. Please note we are not permitted to send RATs home with primary school aged children. Do not hesitate to contact the office if you have any queries.

Our NAPLAN testing has not gone as smoothly as expected due to the high number of absent students and staff. I would sincerely like to thank those staff, particularly Mr Lincoln Matrozis, who have stepped up and did what was required to ensure the tests were administered. On a daily basis, Mr Matrozis has been “catching up” those students who have been absent throughout the testing period.

Wellard PS is now taking enrolments for Kindergarten for 2023. Enrolments will close on Friday 22nd July (Week 1 Term 3). It is most important that you enrol your Kindergarten child for next year as soon as possible. Please speak with neighbours etc. who you know need to enrol their child. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2018 and 30th June 2019. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:

  • Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
  • Up to date Immunisation Records
  • Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.

Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s website.

The P&C will be conducting their next meeting on Monday 23rd May commencing at 6pm in the school staff room. The P&C have done a great job in recent time considering the restrictions we have had in place. The fence has been put around our sustainability garden which is going in behind the canteen. This has only occurred through the hard work of our P&C over a long period of time. Please come along to our next meeting, meet some new people and become involved in creating extra opportunities for the students at Wellard Primary School.

P&C Day

This Friday 20th May is P&C Day. This is a day where the school community thanks and celebrates the contribution of parents/carers/relatives etc. who contribute to the P&C. Recent times has made it very difficult for the P&C to gain any momentum with their fundraising activities particularly as the

opportunity for them to meet has been impacted by Covid. On behalf of the Wellard School Community I would like to thank all parents, carers, relatives and community members for their contribution to the P&C over the last 12 months. I am not going to mention names as I would surely leave someone out. Please take the opportunity to attend our next meeting and become part of the P&C.

Our next Blue Assembly will be conducted by Miss Griffin’s Yr 2 class (Rm 7) at 8.50am in the undercover area on Friday 20th May.  The following week (Friday 27th May) will be a Pink Assembly conducted by Miss Borcich’s Yr 2 class (Rm 8).

Payment of Voluntary Contributions is now due. Funds raised through these contributions are used to purchase resources etc. to complement the educational programs we run throughout the school. Thank you to those families who have already paid their contributions. As a school we are always conscious of the costs we seek from parents in relation to educational activities.

Kindergarten – Year 6 - $60 per child per year.

Our preferred way of payment is by using our Qkr App, please see attached PDF for details.

School contributions can also be paid at the office or by direct deposit

We have a School Development Day on Friday 3rd June (Week 6) where students do not attend school. Staff will be engaged in professional learning and planning for the rest of this year. The following Monday 6th June is a Public Holiday for WA Day.

Thanks everyone and don’t forget to pick up your free RATs!!

Our school is participating in the Mobile Muster Schools Challenge. The Schools Challenge encourages teachers, students, families and our local community to recycle old and unwanted mobile phones and their accessories.

What can you recycle?

  • All makes and models of mobile phones
  • Mobile chargers and accessories
  • Wearables including smart watches and fitness trackers.

There are THREE great reasons to support the Mobile Muster Schools Challenge:

  1. You will help raise much needed funds to protect critically endangered primates. Every mobile phone recycled during the challenge will raise money for participating zoos and their conservation projects.
  2. You will help our school win amazing prizes.
  3. You will be helping the environment. Recycling benefits include avoiding future greenhouse gases, saving energy, and conserving and reusing natural resources.

What our school could win:

Zoo Prizes

Each of the participating zoos have generously donated a range of fantastic prizes including family passes, special animal encounters and online classes and experiences.

Top Collector Prizes

The top three collecting schools in each State and Territory will have the chance to win tech gift vouchers.

  • Gold: $1,000 tech gift voucher
  • Silver: $750 tech gift voucher
  • Bronze: $500 tech gift voucher

How you can help

Help us fill up our Mobile Muster collection box! Find old and unused mobile phones and accessories in your home. Every home has one or two in the bottom junk drawer!

•      Drop them off at school. There will be a collection box outside of TB4

  • Spread the word and ask friends and neighbours to help you recycle.

Last day for collection is Friday 17th June 2022

Due to a large number of missed Dental appointments we would like to encourage parents/ carers to phone the Dental Therapy Centre to advise us they are unable to attend that appointment. Please phone us or email at any time. If we don’t answer, can you please leave a message.

We post Dental appointment letters home to parents/ carers and you will receive a text message two days before your child’s appointment. Please advise us if you have changed address or you have a different phone number.

Our Dental program is currently running behind due to Covid and large numbers of missed appointments are also contributing.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Kay and Lauren.

Dental Staff.
