Newsletter 7, Term 2, Week 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Once again, the school has entered a period of time where we are unable to replace sick staff. We have had a number of staff off with Covid and found it very difficult to replace them. This has resulted in some classes being split, teachers missing out on their DOTT time (Duties Other Than Teaching – planning, assessing etc.) and some teachers being asked to teach in a different role. This is really frustrating for all concerned so I do ask for your cooperation during this difficult time. We have a large supply of free RAT Tests for families available through the front office.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2024

Wellard PS is now taking enrolments for Kindergarten for 2024. Enrolments will close on Friday 21st July (Week 1 Term 3). It is most important that you enrol your Kindergarten child for next year as soon as possible. Please speak with neighbours etc. who you know need to enrol their child. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2019 and 30th June 2020. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:

  • Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
  • Up to date Immunisation Records
  • Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.

Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s website.

PLEASE NOTE: We only have 120 places for Kindergarten students in 2024 – we have already distributed 95 enrolment packages, leaving 25 left. Once we fill the 120 places, we will not be able to receive any more enrolments, so it is very important enrolments are completed as soon as possible.

P&C DAY

This Friday 19th May is P&C Day. This is a day where the school community thanks and celebrates the contribution of parents/carers/relatives etc. who contribute to the P&C. On behalf of the Wellard School

Community, I would like to thank all parents, carers, relatives and community members for their contribution to the P&C over the last 12 months. I am not going to mention names as I would surely leave someone out. Please take the opportunity to attend our next meeting and become part of the P&C.

WELLARD’S WAR ON WASTE

Exciting news !!! Staff and students at Wellard PS have embarked on a journey that will see our school and community become more sustainable in the future. Wellard PS have a dedicated and passionate team of staff members who have been working hard behind the scenes to analyse our waste and implement programs and strategies that will result in less waste going to landfill.

At the beginning of the term students from Room 9, Miss Scheer, and Mrs Singleton conducted a waste audit to determine how much waste our school produced. Students emptied the bins after lunch and sorted the waste into different categories. Each category was then counted and weighed, and the data was entered into a program that allowed us to analyse the amount and types of waste that we are sending to landfill. Are you surprised to know that we produce approximately 9 tonnes of waste per year? That’s about 11kg of waste per student, per year. This data will allow us to identify and prioritise waste programs to be implemented across the school to reduce the amount of waste we are producing. You can see on the pie chart (next page) the breakdown of waste that was sorted.

In most schools the majority of waste is paper, and this term we have begun paper recycling within all classrooms across the school. You may have noticed a little recycle bin in your child’s classroom. At the moment these bins are for recycling paper only. When we get really good at doing that, we will begin mixed recycling. Over the next term we will also be implementing other waste reduction programs across the school. Keep an eye out in future newsletters as well as on your child’s class CONNECT page for information and updates.

Regards

Kylie Singleton

WPS Cross Country – Wednesday 24 May

The Wellard Primary School Cross Country will be on Wednesday 24 May (Week 5). The senior students will be running first, starting with the Year 4s girls (at 9:10am) and the Year 1s going last. A note has already gone home with expected periods of the day that students will be running, but this is a GUIDE only.

The students are encouraged to wear their House Colours. If you or your child is unsure of what House they are in, then this information will be posted on the bulletin board outside of the Administration Building on Friday. Students should also have asthma puffers if required, good footwear and a water bottle.

We hope that as many parents as possible can attend to cheer on their children.

KSSA Winter Sports Carnival (for all Year 6 students and select Year 5 students) will be held on Thursday June 22 (Week 9)
