Newsletter 4, Term 1, Week 8, 23 March 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Time has certainly disappeared with this newsletter being the last edition for the term. Next term is going to be 11 weeks long which will make up for the nine weeks of the first term. I would like to thank all members of the school community for their support throughout this term in ensuring all students had the opportunity to access a wide range of educational experiences. This was complimented by many staff attending professional learning on a range of literacy programs we are implementing across the school. It is best that staff access this professional learning at the beginning of the year so they have the opportunity to implement the various programs throughout the year.

Again, I would like to remind parents and carers about the importance of meeting with your child’s teacher if you have any queries. It is also a good idea to meet with the teacher concerned on a regular basis to see how your child is tracking. Wellard staff are here for your child and we are keen to work with parents and carers in getting the best outcomes for students.

HARMONY DAY

Friday 26th March, is Harmony Day at Wellard PS. Harmony Day is a celebration of the cultural diversity that exists across our nation. It is an opportunity where we acknowledge and appreciate the cultures of all who call Australia home. Held every year on the 21st March, the day coincides with the United Nations “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination”. The message of Harmony Day for this year is “Everyone Belongs”. This day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity, and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.

At Wellard Primary School, we have a number of activities taking place on Harmony Day. This includes a Whole School Family Picnic, a Traditional Cultural Dress Parade with a musical performance and a number of sporting and art activities. Students are encouraged come to school dressed in traditional cultural dress/clothing, or red, orange or yellow (to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia).

Students not wearing any of the above are to wear school uniform.  This is not a free dress day.

A big thank you to our Harmony Day Committee consisting of Mr Lincoln Matrozis, Miss Laura Heuer, Mrs Katie Tunnacliffe, Miss Amanda Makanza and Mrs Pradeepta Joice.

BOOK FAIR

Thank you to everyone who visited our Book Fair over the last week. Mrs Rogers informed me that we had turned over $5000 in sales resulting in the school receiving $2000 worth of books. These books will be a great addition to our library. Special thanks to Mrs Rogers in doing such a wonderful job in organising the Book Fair.

LONG SERVICE LEAVE

Mr Lincoln Matrozis will be going on Long Service Leave for the last week of this term and the first two weeks of next term. Mrs Jess Gibson will be acting in his position whilst Miss Brooke Salvia will be teaching in EC6.

WEBSITE

Quite often we have parents contacting the school seeking information about particular events or have a general question about the operations of the school. Many queries can be answered by accessing our website and looking at the calendar or by reading previous newsletters. If you haven’t looked at our website, please do so by copying the following link into your browser:  https://wellardps.wa.edu.au/

INTERSCHOOL CRICKET CARNIVAL

Last Friday 31 students from Year 5 to 6 participated in our yearly cricket carnival. Although the weather was very hot, our spirit and skills were very impressive. All three of our teams performed superbly with our boy’s team making it all the way to the final. The boys went on to win the final by over 150 runs and have  been invited to attend the regionals in Term 3. The positive attitude and sportsmanship was easy to see and the great results came from those qualities. Well done to all teachers involved and the students for making it a great day. Go Wellard!

Thank you
