Newsletter 13 Term 3 Week 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Yesterday we sent home Individual Student Reports to the parents of Year 3 & 5 students who sat NAPLAN earlier this year. Please check your child’s bag for a large white envelope if you have not received your child’s report. These reports have been released well in advance to what was expected. In fact, the school has received no whole school data about the performance of our students other than what appears on these student reports. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any queries in regards to the report. A pamphlet was inserted in the envelope providing you with some information on how to read the report. I will provide the school community with a report in a future newsletter once we have received the data.

SICK STUDENTS

As we get closer to the warmer months we still have quite a few students (and staff) who are suffering from a range of illnesses. I ask that if your child is coughing and spluttering please keep them home until they have fully recovered. Sending children to school when they are sick can result in students and staff coming down with the same illness. Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED URGENTLY

Mrs Horsten, our Canteen Supervisor, is in desperate need of volunteers in the canteen on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  You might have a couple of hours available in the morning or the afternoon, any contribution will be greatly appreciated. Please see Mrs Horsten if you are available.

NEXT ASSEMBLY

Our next assembly will be conducted by Mrs Hart’s class (Rm 15, Yr 3) on Friday 10th September (Week 8) commencing at 8.50am in the Assembly Area. Mrs Neidig’s Year 3 class (Rm 14) class will conduct their assembly on Monday 20th September at the beginning of NAIDOC Week. Miss Griffin’s class (Yr 2, Rm 6) will hold their assembly on the last day of term, Friday 24th September.

P&C MEETING

Our next P&C Meeting will be conducted on Wednesday 8th September (tomorrow evening) between 6.30 – 7.30pm in the Staff Room. Come along and have a coffee.

OPEN NIGHT

On Tuesday 21st September (Week 10), Wellard PS will be conducting an Open Night where parents are able to visit their child’s classroom and participate in a learning journey guided by their child. Classrooms will be open between 4.00 – 6.00pm. Please note there will not be sufficient time for you to organise a meeting with your child’s teacher during Open Night. This is to be arranged for another time. We do hope that parents (particularly Dads) take up this opportunity to visit Wellard PS.

BOOK FAIR AND BOOK WEEK

The school library conducted a Book Fair between Tuesday 23rd August and Monday 6th September. Students were able to purchase books and many other items before and after school. This event is the major fund raising activity for the school library where funds raised will be used to purchase new books. I am pleased to announce the school community purchased just over $5368.40 worth of books resulting in a commission of $1610.52. Parents purchased and donated books to the library to the value of $300.  These funds will be used to purchase more books for our library. Congratulations Mrs Rogers in organising Book Week and the Book Fair. We are very fortunate to have such a passionate librarian who goes above and beyond what is required. Thank you Mrs Rogers.

Thank you to the parents and carers (and staff) who made our Book Week Parade such a fabulous success. It was so pleasing to see so many students go to the effort of coming to school as their favourite book character. Thanks everyone!

DESIGNATED SCIENCE ROOM

At the 2021 election, the McGowan Government made a commitment to boost science resources at public primary schools. I am pleased to announce that Wellard Primary School will receive a $25000 science equipment grant and science laboratory conversion. We have not been informed of a date for this project to commence but I will keep the community up to date as information becomes available.

EXTRA PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

Hopefully during the school holidays, we will have a range of playground equipment installed throughout our various grassed areas, excluding the quadrangle area. This is to cater for our increased enrolments and to try and spread the play area of students over a greater area. This equipment is designed so that students can balance on, swing on or jump over. We have also purchased two heavy duty ping pong tables that students will be able to use at recess and lunch time. A range of bench areas where students can eat their lunch or just have a chat will also be installed. We are still waiting commencement confirmation about the installation of air conditioning in the Assembly Area and the Kiss and Drive Shelter.

HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVALS (Week 9)

This year our carnival will be conducted over the following days:

  • Kindergarten and Pre-primary Carnival: Monday 13th September 8.50am – 10.40am.
  • Year 1 – 6 Jumps and Throws: Tuesday 14th September
  • Year 1 – 6 Carnival: Thursday 16th September

A note will be going home in the next couple of days with more information about the days.

Kindy and Pre-primary carnival will be held on Monday 13th September on the school oval from 8.50am to 10.40am. Parents are invited to watch the carnival and Pre-primary parents can join their children for recess afterwards.
