Newsletter 10, Term 2, Week 10, 29 June 2022

I would like to thank all school community members for their support and input throughout this semester. Wellard Primary School is a great place to work and a great place to learn. This is because we have a highly professional and committed staff and a parent body who are very positive about the school and the education of their children. We have encountered many challenges this term with a high level of absenteeism of staff and students as a result of COVID-19. Let’s hope everything settles down in Term 3. Thank you to everyone and have a great break.

On Monday afternoon we unfortunately had a Year 1 child hit by a car as he crossed Jaspar Bend. He has a few bruises but thankfully he is okay and was able to attend school the next day. This is a timely reminder to parents/carers about the following:

  • Please SLOW DOWN when driving on the road and in the car parks around Wellard PS.
  • Students in Year 2 and below should be escorted by parents to and from school in the morning and afternoon. They do not have the capacity to judge distances or determine how fast a vehicle is travelling.
  • Please be patient and courteous to all school community members at all times.

As a school we already have 3 staff on duty in the car park areas after school finishes. We really can’t do much more than this other than to ask for the cooperation from all members of the school community.

I do want to thank everyone for their patience and tolerance during drop off and pickup times, particularly when we have builders’ work vehicles parked on the road. However, it is most important we all play a part in keeping the traffic flowing through our Kiss and Drive before and after school. It would be greatly appreciated if parents/carers can do the following:

  • Talk to your children about entering and exiting your vehicle as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Have your children exit your vehicle on the kerb side of your vehicle and not the roadside.
  • Ask your children to move promptly from their classroom after school to the Kiss and Drive area.
  • Parents/carers should not be getting out of their vehicle. If this is necessary, please find a park inside the carpark area.

I want to reassure parents that bullying behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated at Wellard PS. Once informed of an incident, we follow up with the students concerned and then communicate with parents the actions we have taken and the procedures we have put in place. I ask that under no circumstances, are parents to approach, interact with or communicate with children (other than their own) on school grounds (includes the car parks) who were involved in these incidents This is the school’s responsibility. Should parents/carers/older siblings do this, regardless of what a child has said or done to them or others, the adult concerned may be prevented (Prohibition Order) from coming onto the school grounds for a number of weeks.

Parents and carers are reminded that each of your children who attend Wellard PS are entitled to a box containing 20 free RATs. These RATs can be collected from the office. Please note we are not permitted to send the RATs home with primary school aged children. Do not hesitate to contact the office if you have any queries.

It is most important that EVERY PARENT (Pre-primary – Yr 6) has used Connect so they are able to access a copy of their child’s report. Please note that reports (Pre-primary – Yr 6) were sent home yesterday via Connect. Paper copies are provided to all Kindergarten students as their reporting format is very different to the rest of the school. Do not hesitate to contact the office if you experience difficulties accessing Connect.

It is most important that your child reports to the office to receive a Late Note if they arrive after the 8.50am siren (8.35am for Kindergarten and Pre-primary students). This is because we have an SMS system that communicates with those parents whose children are absent. If your child is late and the Attendance Register has already been marked in their class, there is a chance you may receive an SMS saying that your child is absent. Teachers do their very best to monitor the attendance of students but we don’t always get it right particularly with relief teachers and when students head off to specialist teachers (Art, Music, PE or Noongar) at the beginning of the day. Getting a Late Note will ensure parents will not receive a SMS from the school.

Wellard PS is now taking enrolments for Kindergarten for 2023. Enrolments will close on Friday 22nd July (Week 1 Term 3). It is most important that you enrol your Kindergarten child for next year as soon as possible. Please speak with neighbours etc. who you know need to enrol their child. To be eligible for enrolment, students need to be born between 1st July 2018 and 30th June 2019. When enrolling your child, you will need to come into the office and provide the following:

  • Copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
  • Up to date Immunisation Records
  • Proof of Address that you reside in our local intake area – preferably a utility bill in your name that is no older than three months.

Please note that students who live within our local intake area will be prioritised for enrolment. Our local intake area can be found within “Schools Online” on the Department of Education’s Schools Online.

Our next Pink Assembly will be conducted by Mrs Cammarano and Mrs Bradfield’s Yr 1 & 2 class (Rm 23) at 8.50am in the undercover area on Friday 1st July (Week 10).

Payment of Voluntary Contributions is now due. Funds raised through these contributions are used to purchase resources etc. to complement the educational programs we run throughout the school. Thank you to those families who have already paid their contributions. As a school we are always conscious of the costs we seek from parents in relation to educational activities.

Kindergarten – Year 6 - $60 per child per year.

Our preferred way of payment is by using our Qkr App, please see attached PDF for details.

School contributions can also be paid at the office or by direct deposit.

The Wellard Primary School Cross Country Carnival was completed on Thursday, June 16. Due to the support of parents and staff, and the excellent behaviour of the students themselves, the day was a success. In a close finish, only 31 points separated Green House in first and Blue House in fourth. There were a lot of great performances across the individual events, but it was especially pleasing to see every student give their personal best for both themselves and their Houses. Well done to all students who participated in the events. Training for the Interschool Carnival for selected students will begin during the first three weeks of Term 3 at Thomas Oval.

A big thank you goes to the Wellard Primary School staff, the students, and the parents for their efforts. It is the support of all that makes the Cross Country a special event.

A full list of results for the individual events are listed below.

Kind regards,

David McIntyre and Matthew Paparone.
