FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The school community of Wellard Primary consists of families who come from many different cultural backgrounds. This brings a real cultural richness to our school and is something to be acknowledged and celebrated. Consequently, on Monday 24th October, the P&C and the school have organised a Morning Tea (10.30am – 11.30am) where we hope different cultural groups will have the opportunity to share something unique about their country of origin. On this day, parents are encouraged to bring in their morning tea to share with their children in the quadrangle area of the school. Following morning tea (10.30 – 10.55am) we will have a couple of performances from an outside group and a couple of students from our school (10.55 – 11.30am). Tea will be provided by Navjot Kasturi for parents. Each student will be provided with a diya light to decorate in class as part of the Diwali Celebration. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to include any cultural display/custom/dance/practice to the morning events that reflect your heritage. E.g. Haka. Students are encouraged to wear cultural clothing reflective of their country of origin. There is no cost to do this but it is not an opportunity to wear free dress. If students don’t wear their cultural clothing they are to wear school uniform. Kindergarten students who do not attend on this Monday are able to attend. However, these students are to sit with their parents for the hour before heading home. There is no need for them to attend class. Please refrain from providing food for others as we have a quite a number of students who have an allergy to certain types of food.

NAIDOC WEEK

I would like to thank everyone for their contribution last week towards our NAIDOC Week celebrations. In particular, I would like to acknowledge all NAIDOC committee members for the organisation of the many activities that students enjoyed. Our assembly on Friday was outstanding and was a great way to conclude the week. Special thanks to Mrs Roni Forrest, Noongar Elder, for assisting our student leaders in producing our sand mural about our new Indigenous House names. Auntie Marie Taylor is also to be thanked for doing our” Welcome to Country” at our carnival and for formally announcing the names of our Faction Houses.

These are as follows:

  • Karak - the Red tailed cockatoo will be red faction.
  • Koolbardi - the Magpie will be yellow.
  • Waardong the big crow will be blue.
  • Doornart - the Twenty-Eight Parrot will be green.

It was also decided that the winning House would receive the “Jitty Jitty Shield”. Thank you to Mr Collard, Auntie Marie Taylor, student leaders and to those community members who assisted us with the naming process.

HOUSE CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all students on the level of sportsmanship they displayed throughout the days and the way they conducted themselves particularly on our House Carnival Day. Well done Mr Paparone and Mr McIntyre on the organisation of the days. I would also like to thank and acknowledge the efforts of all staff in preparing their students for the carnival. Thank you to those parents who also assisted on the day. Congratulation to Green House (Doornart) on winning the Jitty Jitty Shield and to all individual champions and runner ups. Well done everybody.

STRANGER DANGER

As it is the beginning of the Term, I urge you all to talk to your child or children about walking safely to and from school. Following are some suggestions to help your child/children stay safe.  Please ask your child to:

•      Always travel in company

•      Walk on the right hand side of the road so you face oncoming traffic

•      Wherever possible, leave space between yourself and the roadway

•      Stay in areas that are well lit

•      Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid

       such locations

•      Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably

•      If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number

•      If a passing car stops nearby never get too close

•      Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk

•      Provide this advice to brothers and sisters, especially if younger

•      Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school  and the police, noting number plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features of       individuals.

Remember to call 131 444 or the local station to report an incident to police or 1800 333 000 to reach crime stoppers. Only call 000 in case of an emergency.
